Your goal during the interview is to show the interviewer that the two of you are like-minded. Keep in mind that your interviewer has probably seen your social media profiles, checked your klout score, verified your education and already knows quite a bit about you. Consequently, s/he is wanting to meet you to see if you are a good fit for “their team.”
1. Always follow-up each interview with a handwritten, thank you note. Thank them for their time. Remind them of the key points you discussed and, using their words, show how you may be a perfect fit for the job.
2.Remind them of your contact information.
3.Research the company. Most candidates know nothing about the companies they are interviewing with. Stand out by taking the time to find out about:
- a. their products/services
- b. their philosophy
- c. their position in the marketplace
- d. their target market (their customers)
4. Be proactive and ask questions.
- a. What were my predecessor’s biggest challenges?
- b. Are you working on new projects? (You should know this from your research) How will these projects affect my position?
- c. What does your ideal candidate look like?
- d. What qualities do you expect your ideal candidate to have to succeed in this position?
- e. What are the opportunities for advancement?
5. Practice making your skills relevant to the position. Be prepared to show how your skills
- a. Increased profits
- b. Reduced costs
- c. Improved efficiency
- d. Solved specific job-related problems
6. Before the close of the interview, remind the interviewer of your resume’s key points.
- And, remember, you are the expert on you. People will believe what you tell them about yourself.
7. Do whatever it takes to arrive on time. This goes without saying.
8. Dress for success in the position.
- If you are going for an office job, wear a suit. If you are going for a laborer’s job, jeans and a clean, pressed work-shirt are acceptable.
9. Take time to organize the paperwork you may be bringing to the interview such as extra copies of your resume, letters of recommendation, references, past performance evaluations, etc.
- And, Ladies, there is nothing worse than having to stick your head and hand into a huge handbag to “find things” during an interview. It makes you look unorganized and unprofessional.
10.Go out of your way to be polite to the gatekeepers: receptionists, secretaries and assistants.
- They have a great deal of input on who gets hired, more than you will probably believe. Show them that they are valued. (and sending them a thank-you note with a compliment , too, can go a long way to boosting their opinion of you)
